- Monday 27 Jan - ILCA's at Auckland Anniversary Regatta - Tamaki YC
Thomas Saunders (Tauranga Yacht PBC) has won the Radial class in a 50 boat fleet at the 2010 ISAF Youth Worlds. Thomas's 3, 7, (29), 11, 13, 2, 5, 7 turned out to be very consistent given the variable conditions in Istanbul.
Light conditions on day 1 were followed by long waits for a sea breeze on days 2 and 3 giving just one race late in each day in light and variable conditions. Sailing got underway after midday on the 4th and Thomas moved into the overall lead in the similarly shifty conditions with a difference of 6 to 8 knots between the courses. On the last day the weather finally came to the party with a sunny day and a gusty 8 to 14 knot offshore breeze. Thomas stayed cool with consistently low scores to take the title - "There was a good breeze today, it's my last regatta in the Radial, I was going to Scotland for the Radial Worlds but I'm glad I came here."
Molly Meech (Tauranga Yacht PBC) had a less consistent regatta to finish 24th in the Radial womens, but showed her true form with a 6th in the stronger conditions on the 4th day and a 9th earlier in the regatta.
Meanwhile Alex Maloney and Sam Bullock (Murrays Bay SC) finsihed 2nd overall in the 18 boat 29er fleet after 10 races including 2 bullets.
