Funding & Support for ILCA Sailors

22 Dec 2020

The following support initiatives are available for NZ Laser sailors and Laser fleets;

NZLA Coaching Sessions
NZLA can arrange coaches and assist with coaching costs for any Laser fleet or club group throughout New Zealand. This normally involves NZLA arranging for one of our senior sailors to visit a club for one or two days to undertake coaching sessions.  NZLA will normally meet any payments to the coach and the coaches travel costs with the club required to arrange accommodation (if applicable) and provide a coach boat, coach assistant etc.

YNZ High Performance Squad
YNZ organises and supports a high performance squad who receive coaching, financial and competition support. Membership of this squad is by invitation only from YNZ and is limited to NZ Laser sailors competing at elite level on the International Laser Regatta Circuit, culminating with selection of our Olympic Laser and Laser Radial representatives.

YNZ Youth Squad
YNZ organises a youth squad who receive coaching and competition support. Membership of the youth squad is by invitation from YNZ.

Rotary CORK Scholarship
St Johns Rotary Club sponsor a NZ Youth Laser sailor to attend the CORK regatta in Canada in August each year. Details of the application requirements for the scholarship can be obtained from St Johns Rotary.

Support of Trusts Funding Applications
NZLA can assist with applications from individual or groups of sailors wishing to make applications to gaming trusts for funding.

Local Area Sports Awards
Many local areas have awards and grants available to young sports people from their area to assist with their sports careers. Examples of this are the AIMES awards on Auckland North Shore and the Don Oliver Sports Awards in West Auckland and the Canterbury and Districts Sports Awards. Several Laser sailors have been beneficiaries of these types of awards in the past.

Prime Ministers Scholarships
Prime Ministers Scholarships for exceptional young sportsmen are granted each year and in the past several Laser sailors have been successful in securing these scholarships to assist them with study and with competing internationally.

More details for many of the above are available from the appropriate organisation websites. Additional information on any of the NZLA specific initiatives are available by contacting the NZLA secretary - secretarynzlaser@gmail.com.

Anyone with information on additional support initiatives are requested to contact the NZLA secretary so that details can be included in the list.
