2018 North Island Laser Champs

Another great North Island laser Champs was held at the Napier Sailing Club as part of their annual Summer Regatta.
There were 149 entrants in the various classes of the regatta. Naturally, the biggest fleet was Lasers with 31 x Radials, 17 x Standards and 2 x 4.7's. But also good numbers of Opti's, Open Bic's, OK's and Piper Tigers - a real old school regatta atmosphere.
With the rain lashing the rest of the upper North Island, we probably had the best spot. Cloudy but warm, a few sprinkles on Saturday, but the worst of the forecast rain for Sunday held off till we were off the water and packed up.
The excellent Napier SC race committee got all 7 races, 4 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday. The Lasers shared the outer Triangle+Windward-Leeward course with the OK's and Paper Tigers. That made for some challenging bottom mark roundings - those Paper Tigers arrive from nowhere and can leave a big hole in the wind.
Saturday was light to medium breeze. One big right-hand shift caught some (well me) on the first beat of the standard fleet in the third race, but otherwise, it generally oscillated and was fair racing.
We were delayed 30 minutes at the start on Sunday when the wind died as we got out to the course. But were entertained by a decent school of dolphins (or maybe porpoises) who paralleled the boats as we warmed up in the filling breeze. We then go a medium strength breeze and busier sea state over the groundswell - making for some energetic sailing.
Josh Armit dominated the standard fleet winning every race. He was generally (but not always) in the front few sailors from the start. But really put distance on the chasers on each reach.
Dave Ridley was the next most consistent standard and leading master. He was followed by Luke Deegan who is recently back in the country and a great addition sailing at Lake Pupuke.
The Radials had a much tighter battle with master Scott Leith getting 4 bullets to Luke Cashmore's 3 bullets. They ended on equal total points, and Scott only one point clear to win after the drops. They were followed by Caleb Armit and Albert Stanley finishing on equal points, Caleb taking 3rd on countback.
Only one point shy of the boys was Annabelle Rennie-Younger as leading female and 5th overall. Second female and first youth female was Samantha Stock in 9th after having to drop a DSQ (there must be a story there).
Two 4.7's were mixing it up with the Radials. Jacob Goodall came out on top in all but one race over Charlotte Gray.
Thanks again to Napier SC and all the volunteers who put on such a slick event each year. And all the local and travelling sailors who made it such a great event.
2018 North Harbour Masters

Patience was the name of the game at Sundays North Harbour Masters regatta.
5 races were scheduled and the fleet got on the water on time but the breeze refused to cooperate, boxing the compass and then fading out completely before a course could be set. After a nice chat and lunch ashore a light 5 to 8-knot Easterly breeze arrived, allowing the fleet back on the water for two races before the 3pm start close-off time . The breeze remained unstable all afternoon, with frequent large shifts and pressure variations challenging everyone.
Two sailors however mastered the conditions, GM's Dave Lowe in the Standards and Werner Hennig in the Radials. Both scored two convincing bullets in their respective fleets, showing that it was possible to master the tricky conditions. In the Standards Mark Hursthouse (GM) pipped Tony Nicholson (M) for second on countback while in the Radials Hamilton visitor Helen Spencer(WM) and local GGM Barrie Knott were tied in second place. Leading GGM in the Standards was Commodore John Dowsett, who finished the day with the usual entertaining prize giving.

Manly Mid Winter Regatta Report

The Laser classes were well represented at the Manly Mid Winter Regatta with 40 entrants over the Standard, Radial and 4.7 divisions. The regatta was raced earlier this month between 7-9 July with a range of testing conditions from light to fresh. Moderate conditions kicked off proceedings on day one with slight chop and around 12-15knots of onshore breeze. While we battened down the hatches in apprehension of the big one to hit on Sunday, the breeze only got up to a modest 5-10knots. However Monday was fresh with solid waves.
The highly competitive Radial fleet was dominated by Harrison Baker who won five of the nine races. Jack Lee Rush and Thomas Mulcahy sailed well to be second and third respectively.
Matthew Rist was the top performer from Manly Sailing Club with a respectable 5th overall and relished the wild conditions on Monday: “The waves were a highlight for me since they were great for surfing, so there were big gains and losses on the downwind as well as on the beats.”
The standard division was taken out by Wellingtonian Andrew Dellabarca winning two of the four races sailed on Saturday before staying on to keep the young radial sailors honest on Sunday & Monday. Chris Brodie and Gary Lock followed in 2nd & 3rd respectively. A special mention goes to Dave Ridley who finished in 4th while sailing on a broken foot.
The growing 4.7 class was won by Burty Meffan with Kahurangi Nepia and Kaya Reese 2nd & 3rd respectively.
It was fantastic to have sailors from all over the country including Nelson, Dunedin and Wanaka as well as Napier, Wellington and Kerikeri.
A big thank you from Manly Sailing Club to all those who got involved both on and off the water and we look forward to hosting the Barfoot & Thompson NZ Laser Nationals in early January next year.

2018 Port Ohope Queens Birthday Regatta

Port Ohope hosted their annual QB Regatta.
A highlight was having a radial fleet of 11, including 5 women.
Helen Spencer (Hamilton/Tauranga) took out the radial fleet win overall with consistent 1sts & 2nds. Local Heather Hourigan drew on local knowledge to hold 4th overall, including one bullet. Leny Woolsley (Ohope) and Fi Chapman (Tauranga) ventured into lasers for a new experience, having transferred from keeler backgrounds. Young Clementine Roe (Taupo) got in there amidst the radials with her 4.7 and pulled off some fine starts and sailing (even with a smaller sail).
It was encouraging to experience women competing and encouraging new sailors from clubs around the BoP & Waikato region.

2018 Northshore Freshwater Champs Results & Report

34 sailors entered the 2018 Northshore Freshwater Champs.
Saturday had 12-18 knots from the Northwest with gusts up to 25 knots.
Sunday had sun and a shifty 8-12 knots from the West.
The Full rig numbers were down this year but the quality was excellent with Rohan Lord coming out top over Dave Ridley who was just ahead of Andrew Dellabarca who had driven up from Wellington.
Winner of the Great Grand Masters was Gary Lock who redeemed himself with a 3rd in the last race.
In the Radial there was an excellent turnout of youth, women and masters. Josh Armit series was ruined after a broken mast in race 2, but Luke Cashmore who won overall sailed a good series ahead of Harrison Baker. One to look out for was 13-year-old Caleb Armit who finished 5th.
1st Women was Samantha Stock in 7th and 1st Master Radial was Georgi Yankov in 12th.
Our thanks to Race officer Garth Briden and to Commodore John Dowsett for use of his boat in the trying Saturday conditions. Thanks to Sandy Wilson in the Tower and the rest of the committee who made it a successful day with generous prizes.
The next big Pupuke event is the North Harbour Masters in the 2nd week of November and there is regular sailing through the winter on Sundays at 1.30pm start time.

2018 RSA LASER REGATTA - Results and Report

A fantastic fleet of 37 Lasers participated in the 41st edition of the RSA Laser Regatta at Panmure Lagoon Sailing Club this Sunday with sailors coming from as far away as Port Ohope, Onerahi, Hamilton and the four corners of Auckland to compete in this much anticipated annual event.
The weather came to the party allowing for some great racing conditions on the Basin with winds ranging between 10 to 17 knots. Shifty gusts caught many, even the top sailors, by surprise and a spectacle of acrobatic capsizes could be enjoyed by the public. Rohan Lord from Pupuke Boating Club and previous Laser National Champion and RSA winner in 1987 and 1989 was this year's winner leading the field in 4 of the races in the Laser Standards. Luuk Van Basten Batenburg from Pupuke and previous RSA winner in 2003 2010 and 2011 won the 5th race and came second overall. Mike Keaton from Pupuke came 3rd overall.
In the Radial fleet, PLSC’s very own Kevin Welsh won the day which is his 4th win in that division, Samantha Stock from Murrays Bay Sailing Club and a member of the 2018 NZL Sailing Foundation Youth Team not only came second overall but as well first Junior sailor and first Woman sailor. Taylor Farrell from PLSC came second woman sailor and Helen Spencer from Hamilton Yacht Club came third woman and first Master Women sailor. Jim Quinn from Point Chevalier Sailing Club, a previous World Radial Great Grand Masters Champion and a legend (75+) was third Radial, an amazing achievement showing that skills, not age matter.
The day closed with a BBQ of steak and sausages kindly donated by Manfreight followed by Prizegiving. We have to thank our invaluable army of helpers who kept the whole day running like clockwork. Special thanks to Garth Briden and Jock Bilger for setting up a great arena for the regatta with a great course and some great starts. Need to thank of course our Sponsors who donated an impressive list of prizes.
The Smart Marine 2018 Auckland Laser Masters Champs
Thu 29 Mar 2018 6:50pmA great 2018 Auckland Laser Masters regatta at Tamaki YC on Saturday 7th of April.
Results
It was a big ask for Race Officer Garth and the team to fit in 5 Laser races in combination with Mistrals Champs and Auckland Finn champs.
The sometimes shifty 12 to 19 knot South West conditions were a test of tactics in the morning. But after a 12:30 pm high tide the left side started to play in the afternoon - most of the time.
The course was a Tamaki T2 (Triangle-WIndward Leeward). But with a finish at the top of the course, each race effectively had 3 full beats. So stamina started to pay by the end of the day.
No one had it all their own way in the Standards. The top 4 had at least one win. But overall winner David Ridley had 2 wins and a net 6 after dropping a 4th. He was followed by Kent Copplestone and Ian Barker. Andrew Dellabarca just pipped Cris Brodie on count-back after finishing on equal points.
Phil Wild won the Radials after a battle with Richard Blakey. They finished 1 point apart with Phl having 3 wins and Richard 2. Pete Thomas came 3rd after a tussle with John Pittman.
Great to have some top sailors making a long trip to Auckland to try and take our stuff. Kent Copplestone from Rotorua, Andrew Delabarca from Wellington and John Pittman from New Plymouth. We hope that's the start of a trend.
The after-match was quite special as Commodore Bob Blakey had twisted Grant Dalton's arm - and we had the Americas Cup in the bar and an entertaining talk from Richard Meech from Team New Zealand. It was a bit surreal with a full Commodores Lounge and The Cup just sitting there. Thanks for the loan TNZ - the sailors really appreciated the significant gesture (thanks for winning it too).
