2025 Port Ohope Yacht Club Kings Birthday Regatta
Port Ohope Yacht Club held it’s annual Kings Birthday Regatta on the weekend of 31 May/1 June.
50 competitors sailed in three ILCA divisions, Optimist, Starling and Zephyrs with 16 ILCA 7, 17 ILCA 6 and 5 ILCA 4.
Saturday racing was held in testing conditions of 25-30 kts of SW. The wind mitigated the local knowledge advantage as boat handling and staying upright were key. Four races were completed by the ILCA fleets under professional Race Office Gary Smith.
On Sunday, a Round the Island race was held followed by three around the cans races to complete a seven race series. Ken Tarboton won the ILCA 7, Werner Henning won the ILCA 5 and Rick Spencer won the ICLA 4.
ILCA 7 winner was Max Faulkner from Tauranga, to backup some good results this year, with locals, Mark McIntosh and Ken Tarboton, 2nd and 3rd.
Dave Johnson won the ILCA 6, Scott McDougal 2nd and up and comer Thomas Linklater 3rd.
ILCA 4 winner was Lucy Millar from Gisborne with Michael Hancock from Taupo 2nd and Rick Spencer 3rd.
